Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide. Breast cancer, followed by lung and prostate cancer, is the most common. Epidemiological evidence shows that humans have evolved a sophisticated cooperative system of antioxidant defence mechanism against toxic oxygen intermediates through nutrition. Studies also showed that a higher intake of antioxidants through nutrition possibly lowers the cancer risk. Given this data, food industries are interested in producing functional foods , beverages and nutraceuticals to target this group population.

  • Science-Based Nutrition: An evidence-based prototype that is specifically built based on science to meet the targeted consumer’s needs. Evidence showed that functional foods, nutraceuticals and supplemental micronutrients have the capability to lower cancer cell growth, induce cancer cell apoptosis, and inhibit cell proliferation. For instance, carotenoids promote gap-junctional communication; flavonoids modulate phase I and II xenobiotic detoxification; curcumin, resveratrol, and berberine have been shown to reduce cancer cell growth. Similarly, other phytochemical compounds from curcumin, red pepper and ginger suppress the pathway of nuclear transcription factor-kB that correlated with cancer.
