Creation of Nootropic Candy: Caffeine-Infused with Encapsulation

Background:

A confectionery company specializing in innovative functional foods approached us with a request to develop a new line of nootropic candies. These candies would be infused with caffeine and other nootropic ingredients to enhance cognitive performance, boost energy, and improve focus. The client’s goal was to create a convenient and tasty product that could deliver the benefits of traditional nootropic supplements in a candy format. A major challenge was to ensure sustained release of caffeine and nootropic ingredients without the bitter aftertaste, and to extend the product’s shelf life using encapsulation technology.

Objective:

The primary objective was to develop nootropic candies infused with caffeine that:

  1. Masked the bitter taste of caffeine and other nootropic ingredients.
  2. Used encapsulation technology to ensure sustained release of active ingredients for a prolonged cognitive boost.
  3. Maintained a desirable flavor and texture, while ensuring regulatory compliance and a stable shelf life.

Challenges:

  1. Taste Masking: Caffeine and certain nootropic ingredients have a naturally bitter taste, which could affect the overall consumer experience.
  2. Sustained Release: The client wanted the caffeine to be released gradually over time, providing a steady energy boost rather than a sudden spike and crash.
  3. Stability of Active Ingredients: Nootropic ingredients like L-Theanine, Ginkgo Biloba, and Choline are sensitive to environmental factors such as heat, light, and moisture, which could reduce their efficacy over time.
  4. Encapsulation Technology: Using the right encapsulation technology was crucial for ensuring controlled release and protection of active ingredients from degradation.

Solution & Formulation by Food Research Lab:

Selection of Nootropic Ingredients:

  • The formulation included Caffeine for energy and alertness, L-Theanine for focus and relaxation, and Ginkgo Biloba for cognitive support.
  • Choline was also added for memory enhancement and Rhodiola Rosea for stress reduction. These ingredients were selected for their complementary effects on cognitive function and energy levels.

Encapsulation Technology:

  • Microencapsulation was used to coat the caffeine particles with a protective shell. This technology was employed to:
  • Mask the bitter taste of caffeine.
  • Protect the active ingredients from degradation due to environmental factors.
  • Enable sustained release of the caffeine over time, allowing for a gradual increase in energy rather than a sharp spike.
  • The nootropic ingredients were encapsulated separately to ensure their stability and controlled release.

Sustained Release Mechanism:

  • The encapsulated caffeine was designed to dissolve slowly over time, releasing caffeine steadily into the bloodstream. This controlled release helped avoid the typical energy crash associated with quick caffeine intake.
  • The encapsulated L-Theanine and other nootropics were also designed to release gradually, providing sustained focus and cognitive benefits.

Product Format:

  • The candies were formulated as hard candies and gummies, allowing for versatility in consumer preferences. The hard candies had a smooth texture with a glossy finish, while the gummies had a soft chew, both designed to dissolve or chew slowly, prolonging the effects of the active ingredients.
  • Natural colors were added to enhance the visual appeal without the use of artificial additives, ensuring the product maintained a clean label.

Packaging for Stability:

  • To ensure a longer shelf life and maintain the stability of the nootropic ingredients, the candies were packaged in airtight, light-resistant containers with silica gel desiccants to absorb moisture.
  • The packaging was designed to be portable, targeting consumers who wanted an on-the-go, convenient option for boosting energy and focus.

Implementation at FRL Lab and with Contract manufacturers: Several rounds of formulation trials were conducted to balance flavour, texture, and the sustained release mechanism. Sensory testing was done to ensure the candies were palatable, and stability tests were performed to confirm that the encapsulated ingredients maintained their efficacy over time. The product was tested for heat stability, as well as shelf life under various storage conditions (cool, dry, and room temperature).

Evidence and Regulatory based Outcome: The nootropic candies were successfully launched with the following key features:

  • Sustained Energy Boost: Consumers reported a steady energy boost for 4-6 hours after consuming the candies, with no significant crashes or jitteriness.
  • Improved Focus and Cognitive Function: The combination of caffeine, L-Theanine, and other nootropics delivered noticeable improvements in focus, mental clarity, and productivity.
  • Taste and Texture: The candies were well-received for their pleasant taste, smooth texture, and the absence of any bitter aftertaste typically associated with caffeine-infused products.
  • Shelf Stability: The product achieved a shelf life of up to 12 months, with encapsulated ingredients maintaining their potency throughout the duration.
  • Positive Market Response: The candies gained popularity among students, professionals, and fitness enthusiasts looking for a convenient cognitive and energy-boosting snack.

Conclusion:

By utilizing advanced microencapsulation technology and careful ingredient selection, we were able to develop a nootropic candy that not only provided sustained energy and cognitive benefits but also tasted great. The successful launch of this product opened new market opportunities for the client in the functional food and nootropic supplement sector, positioning them as innovators in the space.
