The future of botanical nutraceuticals in the EU

The future of botanical nutraceuticals in the EU is likely to be shaped by factors such as increasing consumer demand for natural and plant-based products, ongoing research on the health benefits of botanicals, and regulatory developments.

For instance, the European Food and Safety Authority (EFSA) has provided guidance on the safety assessment of botanical ingredients intended to be used as food supplements. In 2021, it gave a compendium on botanicals which assists in deciding whether to approve a botanical product.

  1. On the one hand, the demand for plant-based products and natural ingredients is expected to grow, driven by a desire for healthier and more sustainable food options. This will likely create opportunities for botanical nutraceuticals as consumers increasingly seek products perceived as natural and healthy.
  2. On the other hand, regulatory developments such as the new Novel Food Regulation, which imposes stricter requirements on the authorisation of new foods and ingredients, could also impact the future of botanical nutraceuticals in the EU. In addition, companies will need to ensure that their products comply with the new rules, which could limit the number of botanicals used in food supplements and functional foods.

The future of botanical nutraceuticals in the EU is likely to be shaped by a combination of consumer demand, scientific evidence, and regulatory developments, which will determine which products are approved and how they can be marketed to consumers [1].
