EU-approved fruitflow: A functional ingredient

Fruitflow: An EU-approved cardioprotective functional ingredient

Fruitflow is a proprietary ingredient developed and marketed by Provexis, a UK-based biotechnology company.

  • The company produces and sells a range of dietary supplements and functional food products containing Fruitflow, such as capsules, soft gels, effervescent tablets, and food and beverage formulations.
  • These products are marketed under various brands, including Vegesorb, Sirco, and Tomat-O-Red. Fruitflow is also used as an ingredient in commercial food and beverage products, such as juices, sports drinks, and snacks.
  • Fruitflow contains all the soluble bioactive compounds from tomatoes. After its discovery in 1999, several studies and human trials were conducted to determine its efficacy.
  • The study results revealed that the compounds have a potent anti platelet activity, although they have different mechanisms of action. Since platelet hyperactivity is associated with cardiovascular diseases, anti platelet agents are said to be cardioprotective.
  • The chemical properties of the components can thus be used as therapeutic agents or functional food ingredients.
  • Fruitflow is available in two forms Fruitflow 1 and Fruitflow 2. Fruitflow 1 is a syrup made from minimally processed tomatoes, while Fruitflow 2 is available as tablets after the sugar content of the tomatoes is reduced.
  • A study that compared the anti-platelet activity of Fruitflow and aspirin revealed that they have similar potency.
  • Fruitflow was approved by the EFSA in 2009 under Article 13 of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006. The health claim that “water-soluble tomato extract helps maintain normal platelet aggregation, which contributes to healthy blood flow” was approved by the EU Commission based on the findings of the eight human and seven non-human studies [1].
