Keswick Creamery Recalls Cheese Due to Potential Health Hazard

Products Recalled:

A number of raw and pasteurised cheese products are being recalled by Keswick Creamery at Carrock Farms L.L.C. of Newburg, Pennsylvania, because all goods produced by the company have the potential to be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes. Calverley Cheese, Vulkwin’s Folly Cheese, Vermeer Cheese, Havarti Cheese, Wallaby Cheese, Cider Washed Tomme Cheese, Feta Cheese, Whole Milk Ricotta, Bovre Cheese (plain, oregano and garlic, herbes de provence, cranberry and honey), and Quark Cheese (plain, dill and onion) are the products recalled due to potential contamination

Problem: The F.D.A. undertook a normal sampling procedure that showed certain completed items carried the bacterium, leading to the recall. As the F.D.A. and the business continue to look into what caused the issue, Keswick Creamery has stopped producing and selling any goods. The products were recalled due to the occurrence of listeria monocytogenes

Scientific Evidence: Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) is a kind of pathogenic (disease-causing) bacterium that thrives in wet areas, soil, water, decomposing plants and animals, and may even flourish when exposed to refrigeration and other food preservation techniques. People who consume food infected with L. monocytogenes run the risk of contracting the illness listeriosis.

The disease is often spread when food is collected, processed, packaged, transported, or kept in surroundings contaminated with L. monocytogenes. Byproducts, water, soil, and incoming air all have the potential to pollute an environment. If pets consume L. monocytogenes-contaminated food, the bacterium can potentially spread within the home.

Listeria infections can cause nausea, vomiting, a lingering fever, muscular pains, severe headaches, and stiff necks. Listeria infections must be detected using specific laboratory testing since they might resemble other diseases.

Serious diseases, life-threatening infections, and other problems are most likely to affect pregnant women, kids, the elderly, and folks with weaker immune systems, such as cancer patients. Pregnant women who are sick might only have minor flu-like symptoms, but their illnesses might cause early labour, infection in the baby, or even stillbirth.

What does regulation clarify:

  • According to the Act, 21 U.S.C. 342(a)(1), the food item was adulterated when it was first introduced into and while it was in interstate commerce, and it is still adulterated while it is being held for sale after shipment in interstate commerce. This is because it carries and contains Listeria monocytogenes, a poisonous or harmful substance that could cause harm to human health.
  • The food item is subject to refusal of admission under section 801(a)(3) of the FD&C Act because it appears to be adulterated under the definition of section 402(a)(1) of the FD&C Act because it bears and contains Listeria monocytogenes, a poisonous or deleterious substance that may cause harm to human health.

How pepgra’s FRL  can help

Listeria monocytogenes-contaminated food may not seem or smell rotten, yet it can still result in severe illnesses that can even be fatal. It can take up to Seventy days after Listeria exposure for listeriosis symptoms to manifest. Therefore, anybody who has consumed any items and had these symptoms should visit a doctor.
