How has FSSAI defined Health Supplements?

The Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is responsible for setting standards for the safety and quality of health supplements, as well as regulating their manufacture, sale, and distribution.

  • Health Supplements can be used to offer nutrients to support a normal diet of a person aged above five years. They are intended to aid in the maintenance of good health.
  • The health supplement contains concentrated source of one or more nutrients like enzymes, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, botanicals, prebiotics, probiotics and components from animal origin with established health and nutritional benefits but are not considered as drugs.
  • These products are available in various forms, such as capsules, tablets, powders, liquids, and gummies.
  • Health supplements should be taken in measured unit quantities. The amount of nutrients added to food shall not exceed the recommended daily allowance as specified by the Indian Council of Medical Research, and in the absence of such standards, the international food standards body, namely, the Codex Alimentarius Commission, shall apply.
  • The labelling, presentation, and advertising should not state that the health supplement possesses the ability to prevent, treat, or cure human diseases or make references to such claims.
  • The health supplement should have an advisory warning mentioned as ‘NOT FOR MEDICINAL USE’. The product must state that it is not a substitute for a well-balanced diet and should be kept out of reach of children.
  • In addition, the quantity of nutrients should be stated as a percentage of RDA and a mention of “Not to exceed the recommended daily usage” and any potential interactions or adverse effects if the supplement is consumed in excess or consumed with another medication [1].
