Products Recalled:

Weis Quality Premium Brownie Moose Tracks Ice Cream, available in 48 oz.

Problem:

  • Weis Markets issued an allergy notice for Weis Quality Premium Brownie Moose Tracks Ice Cream on August 31, 2023.
  • This product may contain egg which was not mentioned on the food product label. The product recall was initiated after it was revealed that the product may contain minute quantities of eggs as a result of inadvertent processing on shared equipment.
  • People who have an allergy or extreme sensitivity to eggs encounter the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product.
  • Although there were no illnesses reported, consumers have been asked to return the product for a full refund to ensure their safety [1].

Scientific Evidence:

  • Food allergies are often characterized as unfavorable reactions generated by the intake and ingestion of a dietary ingredient, and they can be triggered by a variety of causes.
  • Hypersensitivity responses are more prevalent in young children, such as milk and egg allergy, and are generally outgrown in adulthood.
  • Egg allergy causes nonspecific symptoms that are frequently misdiagnosed as general food intolerance, gastrointestinal disturbance, or another type of food allergy.
  • An allergic reaction to egg allergens can show as rashes, hives, gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting), or potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis [2].

What Regulations Clarifies:

  • The legislation mandates that food labels list the food source of all significant food allergens used to create the food.
  • People allergic to food ingredients should read labels and avoid foods to which they are allergic.
  • The allergen’s food source must be mentioned at least once on the food product label in either way.
  • The name of the food source of a significant food allergy must appear after the ingredient.  Example: “Whey (milk)”, “Flour(Wheat)”, or
  • The potential allergens must be mentioned at the end of the ingredient list. Example: “Contains wheat, milk, and soy [3].”
