Subject:
Doritos chips recalled due to undeclared allergens
Products Recalled:
A limited number (~ 7,000 bags) of 14.5oz and 1 oz Doritos Nacho Cheese Flavored Tortilla Chips, since they may contain undeclared soy and spicy sweet chilli tortilla chips, which may contain wheat ingredients.
Problem:
The recall was issued on August 1, 2023, since the chips may contain undeclared soy and wheat ingredients. The products may cause allergic reactions in people who have severe sensitivity. The product recall has been issued since the product has reached the retail stores in Pennsylvania. This recall notice informs the customers about why the products were recalled, the allergic reactions to products and what they should do if they have purchased them [1].
Scientific Evidence:
- Food allergy is a detrimental health effect caused by a unique immunological reaction that happens repeatedly after exposure to a specific food.
- Wheat and soy are among the most common allergens among grains and legumes.
- Wheat allergies are caused only by hydrolyzed wheat proteins. Seed storage proteins contain soybean allergens that cause immediate allergic responses in children.
- Wheat and soybean allergies have diverse clinical symptoms primarily driven by their differing allergen components.
- The signs and symptoms can be modest and limited to mucocutaneous manifestations, or they can involve many systems that are all affected simultaneously in systemic anaphylaxis.
- The symptoms may include skin rash, tingling and itching sensation in the oral mucosa or upper part of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Nausea, abdominal pain, cramping, vomiting, and watery/mucous diarrhoea are manifestations of acute GI hypersensitivity to food allergens [2].
What Regulations Clarifies:
- Consumers with food allergies should read food labels to avoid items or components they or their families are allergic to.
- The law requires that food labels specify the source of all major food allergens used in the production of the food.
- Following the ingredient’s name, the name of the food source of a significant allergen must be specified in brackets. Examples: “lecithin (soy),” “flour (wheat),” and “whey (milk)” [3].
